Department of Rheumatology

Rheumatic diseases are collectively called "Vatharogam" in Malayalam colloquially. These diseases can affect the joints, muscles, and bones causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and deformity. They are a range of conditions and include, osteoarthritis (sandhi vatham), Rheumatoid arthritis (ama vatham), gout, psoriatic arthritis (arthritis in patients with the skin disease Psoriasis), Ankylosing spondylitis (inflammatory spine disease), fibromyalgia, connective tissue diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus, sjogrens syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease and scleroderma. Then there are a host of conditions like vasculitis, anti phospholipid syndrome and myopathies. Also is osteoporosis where the bone becomes thin and lead to fracture. Paediatric rheumatology is another area. The department is specialized in the diagnosis and management of the above conditions and also soft tissue rheumatism like carpal tunnel syndrome, various tendinopathies, tenosynovitis and enthesitis. Besides using Disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), the centre is capable of giving Biologics, many of which are coming as infusions and subcutaneous Injection. These drugs are so potent that even in early rheumatoid arthritis it can induce remission in roughly 20% of patients. The following are a list of drugs given

  • Infliximab Remicade/infimab
  • Rituximab(Reditux and ristova)
  • Tocilizumab(Actemra)
  • Etanercept (Enbrel)

The centre has now more than 100 Malayali patients from Kerala who have used Biologics.
International patients can also avail this service since some of the Biologics comes at a lower cost in India, low infusion charges and there are good biosimilars for some conditions.

Joint injections

The rheumatology department provides joint injection (Intra-articular injection) and soft tissue injection. This usually involves injecting a corticosteroid. This is a cheap and effective technique and useful for inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. For osteoarthritis of the knee, viscosupplementation therapy, a kind of joint lubrication, which is more than that, is an accepted form of treatment and Viscosupplement used-

  • Durolane given as single injection; the effect may last for 6 -12 months.
